Bollywood-Dhoom I

Dhoom begins with a slick robbery in which an armoured truck is stripped of its money by four helmeted, leather-suited bikers. Despite the speed of the thrilling opening sequence, it is the super-bikes -- all from the Suzuki stable -- that grab your attention.

A gang of robbers led by Kabir (John Abraham, repeating his screen name from Jism) are carrying various impressive crimes in the city. They all zoom around on fantastic looking motorbikes, picking up loot in a series of pre-planned locations. The cops are obviously not too happy because they don't have a clue about the identity of the criminals and therefore cant try to end their crime spree.

Enter Jai (Abhishek Bachchan, repeating his father's screen name from Sholay), who is a dashing and talented cop assigned the job of catching the gang. Jay needs the help of a street-smart guy and seeks out Ali (Uday Chopra, not repeating any screen name!). Ali is a garage mechanic with hot biking skills. Although Jai and Ali don't really get along, they work together to solve the case.

DHOOM not only takes its inspiration from several Bollywood flicks, but also seems slightly similar to a few Hollywood thrillers [coincidental?], namely THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS and BIKER BOYZ.

The problem with DHOOM is that it relies too heavily on thrills to take it forward. That explains why the bike chase, at several points in the story, is far more interesting than the story itself. In fact, all you remember at the end of the show are some expertly executed chases [Allan Amin], not the drama.

Director Sanjay Gadhvi has concentrated too heavily in making each frame look beautiful. The film is a notch above the ordinary as far as the technique is concerned, but, perhaps, he isn't too well aware that what the viewer hopes to watch are not gadgets and gizmos or mean machines, but a well structured story.

Pritam's music sounds good to the ears. The title track [filmed on Esha, Uday] and 'Shikdum' [filmed on Abhishek, Rimi] can easily be singled out. The choreography of the title track in particular is spectacular. Cinematography is first-rate. As mentioned earlier, the thrills are the saving grace.

Abhishek Bachchan makes a sincere attempt to look the character. John Abraham looks cool as the evil guy. But it is Uday Chopra who stands out with an above ordinary performance, playing to the gallery completely. Rimi gets more scope than Esha; she is quite likeable.

On the whole, Dhoom does have a few loopholes but the film's fast-paced energy is more than enough to ensure your eyes don't stir from the screen for two-and-a-half hours. Go for it, make your day.

Sweet Revenge (2007)

The Closet (2007)

Due to his rebellious nature, Luo Fei (Francis Ng) suffered a traumatic childhood with abuse and maltreatment from his bad-tempered but famous sculptor father Luo Chen. Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer

After the death of Dr.Doom the Fantastic Four think life is back to normal. With Von Doom back in his homeland of Latveria the fantastic four have new troubles when Galactus has decided that Earth is his next target. When his henchman, The Silver Surfer(Norrin Radd), is sent to Earth he discovers that he's getting more than he bargained for when he encounters the Fantastic Four. But that's not all when Dr. Doom decides that after two years in the homeland he is ready to return.

Ming Ming (2007)

Ming Ming is a 21st Century martial arts princess who steals from the rich in the name of love incurs the wrath of a powerful underworld boss in a romantic thriller starring Zhou Xun and Daniel Wu. Debut feature by music video director , Susie Au , the movie is stylishly shot with plenty of ‘freeze frame, rapid-fire cuts, and off-kilter editing’ , MTV-like influence, that creates a somewhat pop-art cinema.

Irresistible rogue D (Wu) has announced that he will run away with the first woman who can give him $5 million, and now the race is on to see which companionship-craving female will cough up the cash first. Ming Ming (Xun) is determined that she and D were meant to be together, and soon sets about robbing mob boss Cat (Jeff Chang) as a means of making that happen. Though she only stole Cat's curious looking box on a criminal whim while robbing him blind, Ming Ming never realized how much such a seemingly-simple looking trinket could mean so much to a man. Later, while fleeing Cat's henchmen, Ming Ming crosses paths with Nana (also Xun), whom she quickly sets up as the scapegoat for her crime. Little does Ming Ming realize, however, that Nana is one of D's girlfriends. with a few nods to the original film, including Cloris Leachman playing the sister of Betty White's unforgettable foul-mouthed character from the original, this film tries to step up to the plate. apparently set a few years after the original, there are suddenly more deaths, and, guess what? a croc in the lake. actually, 3 this time around. John Schneider plays the sheriff and a cast of "looks-familiar-but-don't-know their-name" fills in the rest of the menu. the CGI is there, really noticeable and really bad, as it is in most of the sci-fi channel movies. at least there are some good-looking stereotyped kids thrown into the mix this time, camping at the lake at the worst possible time. David Kelly's original script had some intelligence, great character development and nicely-done humor that is really missing here. i give them credit for trying, but it's lacking...well....almost everything.

Dead Silence (2007)

Every town has it's own ghost story, and a local folktale around Ravens Fair is about a ventriloquist named Mary Shaw. After she went mad in the 1940s, she was accused of kidnapping a young boy who yelled out in one of her performances that she was a fraud. Because of this she was hunted down by townspeople who in the ultimate act of revenge, cut out her tongue and then killed her.
